The point is that military-themed games have traditionally been somewhat of a playtime mainstay in modern culture. Seems like we just can’t get enough of a well-made war game.
And Tiny Tanks is just that!
As you guessed, Tiny Tanks reminds me a lot of the classic toys I mentioned above with its own digital twist thrown in — it takes the miniature playability of G.I. Joe’s and army men, adds in a dash of Battleship-type strategy, and brings the toys of yesteryear to life on your iPhone (or, even better, your iPad!). In the game, you have 20 levels to beat by blasting your way thru strategically placed tanks along the way.
As you progress thru the game, things can get a little more complicated and challenging. Not only do you have to dodge gunfire from other tanks, but you increasingly are forced to think about what your next move might be to avoid oncoming fire. A cool little nuance of the game is how shots from your cannon can be caromed off the level walls to hit enemies in those hard-to-reach places, adding another layer of strategy to the game. It even reminded me a little bit of a previous App of the Week winner, Notebook Ninja — and boy, what an uproar that choice caused!
I was a little skeptical about the controls of this game, seeing how on-screen joypads usually are clunky and detrimental to the game experience. But somehow, the LogixDigital team managed to sneak it in almost invisible, so you hardly know it’s there while playing.
Now, if they’d only add some sound to the game! Seriously, it’s a good thing the game has such awesome gameplay, cuz the lack of sound was a real disappointment.
Nevertheless, despite the deafening silence, Tiny Tanks is still a bunch of fun and a must-download. After you beat the game’s first 20 levels, feel free to tweet @LogixDigital with your feedback and requests for sound.
